Thomas Emmerich had been working at Continental in Korbach for 25 years in the manufacture of passenger car tires when he developed severe problems with his feet due to a rare disease. It quickly becomes clear that he will not be able to do his current job in the long run. Through discussions within the framework of the company integration management, he became aware of the CITT's offer and began training as a plastics and rubber technologist (formerly process mechanic) there in January 2023. But shortly after the start of his training, his health deteriorated drastically: Thomas Emmerich had to be hospitalized for several weeks. After his release, he is severely physically limited and dependent on an electric scooter.
CITT workshop equipped with height-adjustable workbench and ramp
He has already completed the first online modules at this point, but can he take part in the practical phases despite his limited mobility? Thomas Emmerich would like to continue his qualification without wasting time – and his coach Benjamin Genuit and his classmates are receptive to this wish. "I received great support," recalls Thomas Emmerich. "This ranged from a lot of small help – someone took my bag away or put a chair in the classroom – to support in carrying out certain tasks and equipping the workshop." For example, the site has not only purchased a ramp for barrier-free access, but also a height-adjustable workbench. As a result, Thomas Emmerich was able to carry out a large part of the practical work independently or with support – and thus also to complete the upcoming exams. "I was encouraged by this support."
Benjamin Genuit is also proud of his class: "The group's support for Thomas and his great motivation are always an incentive for me as a coach to stand up for him. With the progress Thomas has made since the beginning of his training, he is a role model for all of us."
Thomas Emmerich is expected to hold his IHK certificate in his hands in autumn 2025. Together with his trainer and the site's personnel officer, he is already looking for potentially suitable positions for the time after his training. As a thank you for the support of his class and his trainer, he invited the whole group to a barbecue at home.
